Everything in Three's

Just a question; in Rugby a a goal scored is a tri for what used to be 3 points, a motorbike with 3 wheels is a trike and you get a tricycle. Why is it that when you score three goals in a row in any sport it's called a hattrick?
Lets Face It I am really confused.
